In the Texas Department of Criminal Justince there were 284 babies born to inmates in 2003
alone. Pregnant inmates receive decent prenatal care, but are allowed only three visits of
two hours each for the first three days after birth. Then, the infants are delivered to
whatever outside care arrangements have been made for them, and the mothers return to the
general prison population. These photographs document one 2 hour visit, the first day following
these babies' birth.
