About Jana Birchum | Austin Documentary Photographer
During my three decades as a photojournalist in Austin, I’ve watched the relentless transformation of this city. It was a sweet college town when I came here in the late ‘80s. It’s hardly that today. I have worked to document this city’s continuing evolution, and the people and events which have transformed us.
I am a a documentary photographer & photojournalist driven by a desire to explore the experiences of my community and serve as a voice to tell our stories.
Since day one, the LGBTQ+ community has been central to my work. I came up when there were hardly any images of us, and especially not positive images. I want us to be seen, our stories told in our own voice.
I tend to stand close to my subjects, probably in an effort to see the world through their eyes. If you’re looking for me, I’ll probably be right in the middle of the action.
My archive spans decades of Austin’s history—protests, performances, movements, and milestones. If you need images for a documentary, a book, or an exhibition, let’s talk.
Got a story that needs telling? Looking for something specific from Austin’s past? Reach out—I’d love to hear from you.
